RekordMechanical grinding of spices in grinders with polymeric burrs and transfer of microplastics to food(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-03-19) Zbucki, Łukasz ; Plażuk, EwaNowadays, researchers are alarming that our everyday food products may be contaminated with plastics during the processing and packaging process. Plastic polymers and harmful chemical additives, such as plasticizers, dyes or modifiers, may enter our body along with food in the form of microplastic particles and cause harm to human health. Risk assessment of microplastics in food products is still at an early stage due to the heterogeneity of research and methodology. Material and methods. The present study analyzed the abrasion of plastic particles from several different Himalayan salt and black pepper grinders with burrs made of polymers using FT-IR and SEM techniques. Results. The study confirms the effect of the polymers used on the amount of microplastic released as well as the rate of wear of the grinder burrs from the ground spice. Conclusions. However, determining the impact of using such devices on human health requires further research.

RekordOur life with plastic, a review of plastic product abuse in the age of consumerism / Nasze życie z plastikiem, przegląd aspektów nadużywania produktów z tworzyw sztucznych w dobie konsumpcjonizmu(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-11-14) Plażuk, Ewa ; Zbucki, ŁukaszIt is estimated that up to 9 million tons of plastic waste enters the oceans every year. There is a top of research on the harmfulness of microplastics to our health. While aspects of the use of polymeric packaging for food, dishes, or plastic furniture and clothing are often dictated by economic considerations, psychological, sociological and cultural aspects can be shaped at the level of operation of healthy and rational product choices in local markets. With increased exposure to plastic in the world, the goal of the natural sciences is to develop research tools on the harmfulness of microplastics. Within the framework of social responsibility, social sciences should give recommendations in areas of social life and propose practical measures to make people aware of where microplastic comes from and how to reduce its use.
