Analizie poddano 30 publikacji oryginalnych i przeglądowych opublikowanych w latach 2017-2022 wyszukanych w bazach Scopus i Google Scholar. Wyniki wskazują, że depresja wpływa na funkcjonowanie emocjonalne, poznawcze, behawioralne i somatyczne pacjentów, znacząco obniżając jakość życia oraz zwiększając ryzyko zachowań samobójczych. W opiece nad chorym kluczową rolę odgrywa pielęgniarka, realizująca funkcje opiekuńcze, diagnostyczne, terapeutyczne, rehabilitacyjne, profilaktyczne i edukacyjne. Do najważniejszych działań pielęgniarskich należą ocena stanu zdrowia pacjenta, monitorowanie ryzyka samobójczego, wspieranie procesu leczenia farmakologicznego i psychoterapeutycznego, prowadzenie edukacji zdrowotnej oraz współpraca z rodziną chorego. Skuteczna opieka nad pacjentem z depresją wymaga indywidualizacji działań, podejścia holistycznego oraz współpracy interdyscyplinarnego zespołu terapeutycznego. Wnioski wskazują, że właściwie realizowany proces pielęgnowania stanowi istotny element terapii i poprawy jakości życia osób cierpiących na depresję.
Depression is one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century, and its prevalence continues to rise. The condition is characterized by a complex etiology involving genetic, epigenetic, biological, environmental, and psychosocial factors. The aim of this chapter was to present depression as a disease of modern society and to define the role of nurses in caring for patients with depressive disorders. A non-systematic literature review method was used in this study. The analysis included 30 original and review articles published between 2017 and 2022, retrieved from the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The results indicate that depression affects patients’ emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and somatic functioning, significantly reducing quality of life and increasing the risk of suicidal behavior. Nurses play a key role in patient care, performing caregiving, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, preventive, and educational functions. The most important nursing activities include assessing the patient’s health status, monitoring suicide risk, supporting pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment, providing health education, and collaborating with the patient’s family. Effective care for patients with depression requires individualized interventions, a holistic approach, and collaboration within an interdisciplinary therapeutic team. The findings indicate that a properly implemented nursing process constitutes a significant element of therapy and improves the quality of life for people suffering from depression.
