RekordEvaluation of calcium homeostasis in patients treated in Ternopil University Hospital for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease / Ocena homeostazy wapniowej u pacjentów leczonych na przewlekłą obturacyjną chorobę płuc w Uniwersyteckim Szpitalu w Tarnopolu(Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej, 2016-12-13)Background. Osteoporosis is a significant problem in patients with advanced Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The etiology for the bone loss includes smoking, vitamin D deficiency, concomitant endocrine diseases, sedentary lifestyle, use of glucocorticoids. Osteoporosis is the pathology of calcium metabolism, thus the peculiarities of calcium homeostasis in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, depending on their bone mineral density were researched in the article. Material and methods. It was examined 86 patients with stage 3 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Bone densitometry was performed on lumbar vertebrae using dual energy X-ray absorption scanner “Lunar”. Results. It was not find a significant difference in the duration of disease among patients suffering from 3rd stage CO PD with or without bone mass deficiency. All females with low bone mineral density had concomitant endocrine pathologies. It was established the increase of calcium content in sputum of patients with CO PD. Osteoporosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease develops under influence of numerous factors, among which are: lack of physical activity, increase in calcium excretion with urine and sputum, low amount of calcium in diet, reduced exposure to sunlight, concomitant endocrine diseases in females and exposure to stressful situations, smoking, vitamin D deficiency. Conclusions. Osteoporosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease develops under influence of numerous factors, among which are: lack of physical activity, increase in calcium excretion with urine and sputum, low amount of calcium in diet, reduced exposure to sunlight, concomitant endocrine diseases in females and exposure to stressful situations.

RekordIsobolographic assessment of interactions between retigabine and phenytoin in the mouse maximal electroshock-induced seizure model and chimney test / Izobolograficzne oszacowanie interakcji poniędzy retigabiną a fenytoiną w mysim modelu drgawek wywoływanych maksymalnym wstrząsem elektrycznym i teście komina(Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej, 2016-12-13)Background. Search for beneficial combinations of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) that can be used in patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy, is still conducted both empirically and rationally, based on molecular mechanisms of AEDs’ action. This study was aimed at characterizing the interaction profiles for the combination of two AEDs (i.e., retigabine [RTG] and phenytoin [PHT]) in the maximal electroshock-induced seizures (MES) and chimney test (motor performance) in adult male albino Swiss mice. Material and methods. Type I isobolographic analysis was used to determine interactions for the combination of RTG with PHT (at three fixed-ratios of 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1) with respect to its anticonvulsant and acute neurotoxic effects in the MES and chimney tests, respectively. Total brain concentrations of RTG and PHT were estimated to exclude any pharmacokinetic interaction between AEDs. Results. The combination of RTG with PHT at the fixed-ratios of 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1 produced additive interactions in both, the MES and chimney tests. RTG and PHT did not affect each other their total brain concentrations in mice, confirming pharmacodynamic interaction between the investigated drugs. Conclusions. The combination of RTG with PHT was neutral suggesting that this two-drug combination might occur favorable in some patients with refractory epilepsy.

RekordVariations in morphology of lumbar spinal canal in degenerative discopathy / Zmienność morfologii lędźwiowego kanału kręgowego w chorobie zwyrodnieniowej krążka(Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej, 2016-12-13)Background. Lumbar spine, due to the large range of motion, is exposed to frequent occurrence of intervertebral disc disease. Discopathy initiates a series of changes as a result of a change in the morphology of the spinal canal. With age soft tissue undergoes degeneration as well as bone tissue, which favors the formation of the spinal canal stenosis. The aim of the study was to analyze and define the connections between the overload of intervertebral discs and changes in the volume of the spinal canal structures. Material and methods. A group of 60 patients was examined using a multi-row helical CT scanner. Results. Studies have shown that the shape of the spinal canal varies with age and reduces its capacity toward the sacral spine. There is the occurrence of three types of the spinal canal shape: oval, triangular and clover, which is the side effect of smoothing out of canal side pouches due to degenerative growth of zygapophysis. Conclusions. Based on the analysis it was found that discopathy took place more often in the triangular canal, and less often in the clover-shaped canal, which indicates that the prevalence of discopaty may be related to the capacity of the spinal canal.

RekordSelected elements of lifestyle in relation to the level of a non-specific pain of the cervical spine in persons aged 20-35 years / Wybrane elementy stylu życia a poziom nieswoistych bólów kręgosłupa szyjnego osób w wieku 20-35 lat(Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej, 2016-12-13)Background. Non-specific back pain indicating serious distant health and social consequences is an important challenge for both health promotion and prevention programs. Material and methods. The study was conducted 150 patients (20-35 years) of the Rehabilitation Centre of the Regional Occupational Medicine Centre, Therapeutic and Preventive Centre in Lublin diagnosed with non-specific neck pain. The study also used VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) for self-assessment of the severity of pain - using proprietary questionnaire. Results. The study also revealed unhealthy behaviour of respondents: lack of regular physical activity, regular – almost daily – consumption of alcohol and fatigue. In 36% of study participants, abnormal body mass index (BMI) was found. There was a significant relationship between the irregularity of this index and the level of severity of pain according to VAS (visual analogue scale). Reported pain was the greater – the more the respondents crossed a normal working time. No significant relationship between the level of pain and the quality of physical recreation, economic status and the level of life satisfaction was shown. Conclusions. Prevention programs should be addressed especially to women with abnormal BMI value who perform long hours’ office work. Health education in the field of work ergonomics, compensatory exercises and rational nutrition is necessary.

RekordStudents leisure time as a determinant of their physical activity at universities of the EU Visegrad Group countries / Czas wolny studentów czynnikiem warunkującym aktywność fizyczną na przykładzie uczelni z Państw Wyszehradzkich(Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej, 2016-12-13)Background. Studies on physical activity are vital for those students destined to become the future elite in the Visegrad countries. This issue is of particular concern because most studies undertaken from various countries have, in this respect, demonstrated significant deficiencies. Study aims: to determine the link between students leisure time and their levels of physical activity according to gender. Material and methods. Subjects were 2337 university students consisting of 1169 females and 1068 males from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary studying a variety of disciplines. The long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used as a standardised measure for the study. Results. Male students were found to have significantly more leisure time than females, with the highest levels observed in those studying the humanities, somewhat lower levels for the medical sciences whilst the lowest were for the technical sciences. The greater the amount of leisure time, the more significant was the impact found on levels of physical activity. Male students with sufficient leisure time demonstrated the highest levels of physical activity. However, no such relation was found in women where, in contrast, the highest levels of physical activity were found in those having too little leisure time. Conclusions. The differences observed between genders in their links with leisure time and levels of physical activity should be taken into account when the teaching of physical activities are designed/devised for student studies.
