Pentalogy of Cantrell: a case report
(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-05-17) Płusajska, Justyna ; Świercz, Grzegorz ; Młodawski, Jakub ; Malmur, Mariusz ; Zalega, Magdalena
Cantrell’s pentalogy is a rare developmental disorder occurring between the 14th and 18th day of embryonic life. Diagnosis is possible in the first trimester, when the rupturing of the continuity of the anterior chest cavity and abdominal walls is usually found. Ectopic heart and umbilical hernia is also characteristic. In this article, a case of a thirty-three-year-old patient in second pregnancy was described, who was diagnosed with developmental disorders during a routine visit to a gynecologist. Woman was referred to the Laboratory of Prenatal Research, where the fetus was diagnosed with: umbilical cord hernia, diaphragmatic hernia with diaphragmatic defect, sternal defect, ectopic heart and pericardial defect, the swelling of the entire fetus – NT 5 mm – and the reverse flow in the DV were visualized. The woman and the child’s father, after having been presented with the prognosis, decided to terminate the pregnancy. Due to the heterogeneous picture of disorders occurring in pentalogy of Cantrell and the small number of cases described in the literature, each case should be approached with caution and in an individual manner. Abnormalities in the structure of the heart additionally compounded by coexisting disorders are crucial for the prognosis and they determine the method and order of treatment.

Physical activity and the quality of life in the physical dimension of respondents from Independent Culture Centers in Poland
(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2025-02-25) Bergier, Michał
Background. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential relationship between physical activity and quality of life of people representing Independent Culture Centers (ICC). It is probably the first scientific article addressing the issue of people from such a niche group as ICC members and examining their physical activity and quality of life. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 104 people (38 women and 66 men), aged 19 to 46, members of ICC located in Poland. The level of physical activity of the respondents was examined using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The quality of life in the physical dimension was assessed using the 36-Short Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF36v2). Results. Even though in each of the analyzed levels of physical activity intensity differences were demonstrated between respondents from the compared groups of people with different levels of quality of life, in none of the analyzed cases was a statistically significant differentiation demonstrated. Conclusions. The results obtained by the research ICC respondents are unusual in light of previous research related to the issue under consideration. Therefore, further research is needed among ICC members, which would help indicate what a relationship is there between physical activity and quality of life.

Assessing the impact of home-based conventional exercise and cryotherapy on lower limb muscle strength and walking ability in individuals with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled clinical trial
(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-05-17) MohammedSadiq, Hawar Abdulrazaq ; Rasool, Mohammad Tahir
Background. K nee osteoarthritis ( KOA) i s a c ommon a ge-related joint c ondition c ausing discomfort, reduced physical capability, functional diminishment, and diminished life quality. Material and methods. I n t his c linical r andomized c ontrolled t rial, K OA-diagnosed individuals were randomly allocated into three cohorts: an experimental cohort (n=17), a control cohort (n=14), and a secondary control cohort (n=17). Interventions included two months of home-based exercise (HBE) with cryotherapy, exclusive HBE engagement for two months, and routine therapeutic and physiotherapeutic interventions at a medical facility. Results. The experimental and first control cohorts exhibited notably enhanced lower-limb muscle strength and walking capabilities compared with the second control cohort after two months. Both experimental and first control groups showed significantly lower fivetime sit-to-stand scores (5TSTS) and walking 40 meters scores compared with the second control group (p<0.0001). However, the control group displayed slightly improved scores in 5TSTS and 4x10-meter walking relative to the experimental group, though not statistically significant. Conclusions. Combining HBE with cryotherapy did not significantly improve lower-limb muscle strength and walking in KOA patients.

Analysis of musculoskeletal injuries among adult Internet gaming players: a cross-sectional study
(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2025-02-20) Cieśla, Artur ; Kochman, Maciej ; Vašková, Monika ; Guzik, Agnieszka ; Czarny, Wojciech ; Pelc, Kamil ; Ružbarska, Beata ; Drużbicki, Mariusz
Background. I nternet g aming ( IG) l eads t o s ocial d isturbances, b ehavioral d isorders, and physical impairments. The cross-sectional study focused on back pain experienced by IG players and investigated the relationships between pain complaints and the factors potentially predicting. Material and methods. The survey was conducted online and a total of 1,104 IG players were recruited for the study. Disability assessment was performed using The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Results. The majority of the respondents (72.1%) reported they experienced back pain. Assessment of pain showed significant differences (p<0.0001) with greater pain levels in the lumbar spine. The findings also show significant differences (p<0.001) in disability level between respondents who reported they did and did not get regular sleep at night. Significant differences (p<0.001) were also shown in the disability levels between the respondents engaging in sports or exercise and those who did not do any sport or exercise. Conclusions. The prevalence of back pain complaints in IG players was high. Higher disability levels were observed in older gamers, individuals with lumbar spine pain, and those who did not get regular sleep at night, or do any sport or exercise. Future prospective longitudinal studies investigating the cause-and-effect nature of the findings are necessary.

Barriers and facilitators for early and exclusive breastfeeding in the Duhok Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan
(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-04-18) Haleem, Khaled Hussein ; Mohammed, Bashar Ibrahim ; Abdulrahman, Nareen Arif ; Haleem, Azad Abduljabar ; Atrushi, Akrem Mohammad
Background. Breast milk is the best f ood satisfying a baby’s needs. Sociodemographic factors, antenatal care practices, and professional assistance at birth may be barriers against this. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of exclusivity and to identify the barriers to breastfeeding. Material and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2022-2023 involving 336 mothers of infants (6-24 months) who visited primary healthcare centers. Information on socioeconomic background, pregnancy and delivery details, and awareness of breastfeeding benefits was collected using a pretested questionnaire. Data analysis was performed and a p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results. The whole number of infants breastfed was 146 (43.45%), and for six months, this was 25 (7.4%). The significant factors were: living in Duhok City, not having sufficient knowledge about the breastfeeding, decision to breastfeed during pregnancy, starting breastfeeding soon after delivery, vaginal delivery, order of birth, not giving sugar after delivery, being supported by the husband, holding the baby after delivery, knowledge of benefits of breastfeeding. The most significant factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding were maternal age <25 years, diseases during pregnancy, birth order (2nd o r 3rd ), explanation of the benefits of breastfeeding by health professionals, decision to exclusively breastfeed during pregnancy, delivery in a governmental hospital, and holding the baby after birth (OR=1.09, 1.037, 1.048, 1.677, 5.869, 1.097, and 2.45, respectively). Conclusions. This study identified multifaceted barriers to early exclusive breastfeeding in the Duhok Governorate.
