RekordRelationship between concordance of physical activity patterns of parents and adult children and their body mass status(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-02-09) Domaradzki, JarosławBackground. The aim of the research was to examine the concordance of physical activity (PA) and inactivity patterns between parents and their adult children and its potential association with their body weight status. Material and methods. Students (n=144) and their parents (n=144) were examined. The outcomes were: body height, weight, BMI and the IPAQ questionnaire results. Tanglegrams were used in the analyses to compare two clustering trees representing the patterns of parents and children. Results. Incongruence in PA patterns between parents and adult children has been detected. The highest PA has been observed in sons of mothers (IPAQ: F=8.03, p<0.001; leisure-time: F=6.15, p<0.001; vigorous: F=9.37, p<0.001), and fathers of the daughters (in IPAQ scores and moderate activity: IPAQ: F=4.77, p<0.003; moderate: F=4.03, p<0.009). Tanglegrams confirmed a greater similarity between sons and fathers, and sons and mothers. The most similar subdomains were: walking, transport, and high activity during leisure time. These similar patterns are partially associated with lower BMI values (intensive activity: b=0.02, p=0.022; IPAQ: b=-0.04, p<0.001) and a lower likelihood of higher body weight status (intensive activity: OR=1.02, p=0.070; IPAQ: OR=0.96, p<0.004, leisure time: OR=0.98, p=0.066). Conclusions. When planning PA interventions, a counseling approach with parents to advocate for use of combinations of PA practices, to motivate their children in participation in PA, may prove effective.

RekordGait cycle of slow walking in high heels(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-02-26) Jandova, Soňa ; Gajdoš, Miloslav ; Čuj, Jakub ; Demjanovič Kendrova, Lucia ; Mikuľákova, WiolettaBackground. The aim of the work was to ascertain the differences in the temporal characteristics of the gait cycle of slow walking in high heels. The study particularly focused on a group of women who started to wear high heels more often. Material and methods. The Pedar X System (Novel, Germany) was used to analyze the temporal characteristics of the gait cycle. Average values of temporal variables in both feet were ascertained based on the measured functions of maximal peak pressure (PPmax) and maximal vertical force (MVFmax) depending on time. Results. Slow walking in high heels, as compared to slow walking in flat shoes, resulted in shortening the gait cycle in all its phases. This in turn increased the frequency of steps in high heels. While walking at a speed of v1=0.97 m.s-1 (slow speed) and v2=0.56 m.s-1 (very slow speed), there were no differences in stance/swing ratio between high heels and flat shoes. Conclusions. Slow walking speeds can be considered to be suitable for women who have recently started walking in high-heeled shoes and have had no previous experience with them.

RekordPharmacological support treatment of non-suicidal self-injuries among children and adolescents: a narrative review(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-03-13) Rogalski, Jakub ; Tomczak, TomaszNon-suicidal self-injuries (NSSI) constitute a significant problem among children and adolescents, especially during the global burden of mental disorders worldwide. Moreover, such behaviors are perceived as a risk factor for the suicidal behaviors occurrence in the future. Thus, it would appear necessary to search for effective forms of their treatment. A pharmacological approach may play a supportive role. This study is a narrative review summarizing scientific reports on possible pharmacological support treatment of NSSI among children and adolescents. Internet scientific bases were searched for literature, including original research, review articles and case reports. There are many possible pharmacological interventions that may reduce the incidence of self-harm behaviors. Antihistamines and neuroleptics can be used successfully in the acute phase. In turn, second-generation antipsychotics and potentially naltrexone seem to be the most effective in long-term treatment. Although psychotherapy is the basic form of NSSI treatment, a psychopharmacological approach may play an essential role in reducing the incidence of self-harm behaviors. Nevertheless, the use of psychotropic medications is prohibited in most cases and may be limited due to their side effects. Moreover, there is a need to validate their efficiency in next studies to gather strong evidences concerning their widespread use.

RekordPatients from nursing and residential care facilities in the practice of Emergency Medical Teams: a two-year study(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-03-19) Dudziński, Łukasz ; Czyżewski, ŁukaszBackground. The aim of the study was to analyze Emergency Medical Services Team’s (EMSTs) interventions to patients residing in nursing care (NCF) and residential care facilities (RCF), taking into account the patient’s gender, age, reasons for the call, time of intervention. Material and methods. The study included a 2-year retrospective analysis of the EMSTs’ interventions in Lublin Province (northern part), Poland, for the period January 1st, 2021 – December 31st, 2022. The data comes from the departure documentation of teams intervening in the State Emergency Medical Services system: the departure order card and the emergency medical response card. Results. There were 177 EMSTs’ interventions selected, representing 1.27% of the total medical interventions. Age had a statistically significant impact on the reason for calling the EMST (p<0.001). The highest mean age was for neurological disorders (77±18 years), while the lowest was for consciousness disorders (44±18 years). No association was shown between the location of the patient’s residence (NCF vs. RCF). Conclusions. In the group under study, interventions due to circulatory and respiratory disorders dominated. The demand for medical procedures that exceeded the capacity of care facilities was high (69% of cases transport to the ED, 44% of interventions with pharmacotherapy).

RekordActivity level and quality of life among patients undergoing knee replacement surgery(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-04-08) Alfatafta, Huda ; Alfatafta, Mahmoud ; Onchonga, David ; Khatatbeh, Haitham ; Amer, Faten ; Than, Peter ; Molics, Balint ; Boncz, Imre ; Ács, PongrácKnee osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread disease in Hungary. For severe cases, knee replacement surgery is the last-stage intervention to reduce pain and improve the quality of life. Nevertheless, there is no information about the activity level of Hungarians with severe knee OA. This study evaluated the improvement in the quality of life pre-post knee replacement surgery among Hungarian patients. This study included eight participants (70.8±4.5 years and 30.0±3.0 kg/m2) with severe knee OA undergoing total unilateral knee replacement surgery. The activity level was evaluated with ActivPAL and Short Form-36 one month before surgery and one year after surgery. One year after surgery, the sedentary time and standing time had significantly improved among the patients by 12% (p=0.033) and 65.7% (p=0.030), respectively. The number of steps improved by 17.1% (p=0.11) based on ActivPAL. Based on the Short Form-36, the overall score, pain, and physical function had improved after one year by 50.0% (p=0.050), 23.9% (p=0.32), and 5.1% (p=0.58), respectively. This is the first study in Hungary that used both objective and subjective tools. The outcomes found that the activity level and pain improved after surgery among Hungarian patients with severe knee OA. However, the sedentary time after the surgery should be reduced to reach the maximum benefits of surgery.

RekordYoga: the ancient solution for modern anxiety(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-04-10) Kuśmierska, Martyna ; Ujma, Przemysław ; Kuśmierski, JakubRecently, we have encountered a fascinating article penned by Martínez- Calderon et al. [1], which concentrates on how yoga-based interventions could lessen symptoms of anxiety in those with anxiety disorders and alleviate symptoms of depression in depressive disorders. Our attention was particularly drawn to the section dedicated to anxiety disorders, especially since there are few articles exploring this relationship. We find this topic to be of great importance, especially as an increasing number of people are affected by anxiety disorders and there is a substantial demand for effective management therapies. Anxiety disorders present with diverse symptoms, including ongoing anxiety, fears related to social situations and performance, unexpected panic attacks that can be triggered or untriggered, concerns about forthcoming events, and actions taken to evade particular scenarios. Moreover, anxiety disorders often manifest physical symptoms, including heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, and feelings of dizziness [2].

RekordProblem of nursing care rationing in intensive care units(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-04-12) Papierkowska, Roksana ; Chmielewski, Jarosław Piotr ; Kosecka, Justyna ; Orczykowski, Tomasz ; Zięba, Ewa ; Wróblewska, IzabelaBackground. Nursing care rationing is a global problem that can pose a real threat to the health and lives of patients. The purpose of this study was to learn about the incidence of care rationing by nursing staff and to analyze the activities that are most often getting limited in patient care. Material and methods. A total of 217 nursing staff participated in the survey. The inclusion criteria consisted of working in an intensive care unit and consenting to participate in the study. A self-administered questionnaire and standardized questionnaires were used in the analysis: BERNCA, GSES, and IZZ. Statistical validity was verified at a=0.05. Results. Lack of staff was the most common reason for care rationing (47.92%). Women rationed nursing care more than men (68.66%). Informing the patient about planned tests or treatment was the activity rationed most frequently (6.47%). As healthy behaviors become more frequent, the incidence of self-efficacy increases and, according to the BERNCA-R questionnaire, the rationing of nursing care becomes markedly more frequent as the number of patients per nurse increases. As the number of nursing jobs and the number of hours a nurse works per month increase, the rationing of nursing care increases markedly as well (p=0.032). Conclusions. The most commonly rationed activity consisted of informing patients about tests or treatment. As the number of patients, working hours and jobs increase, the level of nursing care rationing increases. The level of care rationing increases as the number of additional activities performed increases.

RekordHealth-promoting behaviors of women and their opinions on the quality of fitness services, depending on experienced musculoskeletal injuries(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-04-17) Puszczałowska-Lizis, Ewa ; Lizis, Sabina ; Głód, Paula ; Kitschke, EwaBackground. The increasing awareness of modern societies about the adverse consequences of a sedentary lifestyle has an impact on the growing interest in physical recreation. The study aimed at health-promoting behaviors of women and their opinions on the fitness services quality, depending on experienced musculoskeletal injuries. Material and methods. Research using the diagnostic survey method included 100 women aged 35-55, clients of the “EUROGYM” fitness club in Krosno, Poland. Research tool was a self made questionnaire, which covered 3 thematic sections. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Pearson Chi-square test were used to analyze the results. Results. Declarations about medical consultation before deciding to use fitness club offer depended on the group (p=0.044). The majority of women, regardless of group, did not use wellness (p=0.086). Most respondents, regardless of group, considered the instructor’s competence to be high (p=0.080). Conclusions. There is a need to implement programs that popularize the need to consult one’s health with a doctor before participating in fitness activities. In addition, it is necessary to popularize the importance of wellness for tissue regeneration and leveling the effects of fatigue on the body.

RekordPsoriasis and cardiovascular risk. Is there any association?(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-05-17) Gabryszewski, Mateusz ; Karp, Katarzyna ; Puźniak, Piotr ; Karp, PaulinaWe have recently read a very interesting article by Branisteanu et al. [1], describing the association between psoriasis and increased cardiovascular risk (CVR). We believe this article raises an important issue and the dissemination of knowledge about the relationship between these two diseases may promote prevention and earlier diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Psoriasis is a chronic, papulosquamous skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, affecting 3-5% of the general population worldwide [1]. Individuals with psoriasis are at increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidaemia, obesity and diabetes [2]. Research is being conducted to understand the molecular mechanisms between the development of psoriasis and its comorbidities. Recent studies have identified that psoriasis and CVD have various common pathogenic pathways including genetic factors, inflammatory pathways, adipokine secretion, insulin resistance, lipoproteins, angiogenesis and oxidative stress [3]. Reasons for increased CVD risk include both increased systemic inflammation caused by psoriatic lesions, usually covering large areas of the skin and the fact that psoriasis is associated with an increased incidence of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome and a sedentary lifestyle [3]. The study by Karbach et al. [4] found that psoriatic patients with heart attacks were on average 5 years younger than heart attack patients without psoriasis. Conversely, the study showed lower in-hospital mortality in psoriatic patients with myocardial infarction, probably caused by lower age [4].

RekordPreventive medicine in clinical practice: rationale based on the diversity of implemented interventions with spa patients in Poland in 2018-2023(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-11-18) Wicher, Patryk Tomasz ; Śliwczyński, Andrzej ; Wierzba, Waldemar ; Grekowicz, Katarzyna ; Mółka, Michał ; Wicher, Anna ; Rzeźnicki, Adam ; Baj-Korpak, JoannaBackground. Spa treatment is widely used in today’s medicine and it is increasingly gaining recognition among patients. Its essence is the application of natural therapeutic stimuli, individually selected according to the stage of the disease. Balneo-physical treatments carried out in spas result in a reduction in ailments, as well as an improvement in the quality of life of patients. At the same time, it should be emphasized that the treatment of patients requires an appropriate plan, considering the duration of therapy. The aim of this study was to provide empirical argumentation as a basis for innovative modifications of spa treatment in Poland. Material and methods. Health problems and patient ages were grouped according to the methodology of the Central Statistical Office. Results. In 2018, the largest number of patients used services because of rheumatic diseases (around 300,000), followed by cardiological (over 43,000) and neurological interventions (over 33,000). Rheumatic interventions remained in the lead in 2023, while cardiological ones swapped the ranking position with neurological interventions. Conclusions. The epidemiological data obtained between 2018 and 2023, i.e. including the post-pandemic period, provide a set of indications justifying the indispensable increase in the importance of preventive medicine in daily clinical practice, as well as during spa treatment.

RekordAnalysis of physical activity readiness in Eastern Slovakia university students amid the COVID-19 pandemic(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2024-11-29) Melichar, Richard ; Kaško, Dávid ; Junger, JánBackground. University students faced unique challenges due to campus closures and online education during the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially affecting their physical and mental health. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess physical activity (PA) readiness among university students during these disruptions. Material and methods. During the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years, 1,135 students from the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice (UPJŠ) and Technical University in Košice (TUKE) completed the PAR-Q online. The PAR-Q included ten health questions and two about pre-COVID-19 PA and the impact of the pandemic. Chi-squared and Fisher’s exact tests were used in R Studio to examine health issues and participant characteristics like gender and university affiliation. Logistic regression assessed pandemic-related PA changes. Results. UPJŠ and TUKE students had significantly different health outcomes, including gender specific variations. Female students at both universities reported higher dizziness rates (22.0% at UPJŠ and 23.2% at TUKE, p<0.001) than male students. Females reported more chest pain at TUKE (21.2%) compared to UPJŠ (12.9%, p<0.001). UPJŠ students were 4.33 times more likely than TUKE students to maintain or increase PA during the pandemic (p=0.005). Other health conditions did not predict pandemic PA. Conclusions. The findings demonstrate that mostly university affiliation, out of all other variables, significantly influenced health outcomes and PA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RekordHarmfulness and potential health benefits of the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria): a literature review(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2025-02-19) Grochowska, Julia ; Grygoruk, Natalia ; Weiner, MarcinThe fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is widely considered a poisonous species with psychedelic effects. Patients report to hospital after consuming it with symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, agitation and ataxia. Less frequently, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, tachycardia, bradycardia, hypertension, hypothermia or hyperthermia and metabolic acidosis may occur, and fatal poisonings also occur. Despite the high public awareness of the toxicity of the fly agaric, a certain trend has been observed in recent decades towards its amateur consumption, mainly for medicinal purposes. In relation to the latest research, it is indicated that A. muscaria may be potentially useful in the fight against conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and even addictions. The fly agaric contains compounds that individually exhibit a number of different biological activities, but the existing studies do not yet allow for a comprehensive understanding of their properties and effects on the human body. Unlike in the case of other psychoactive mushrooms, the consumption and trade of the fly agaric is often not regulated by law, and it is easily available for purchase online. Detailed research on the toxicity of the fly agaric is urgently needed to increase public awareness of the risks associated with its use.
