RekordChanges of mental status characteristics among Hungarian adults in the year following COVID-19 pandemic(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023) Lakatos, Csilla ; Kiss-Tóth, Emőke ; Rucska, AndreaBackground. The negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health are still present today and are the subject of international research. The present cross-sectional quantitative study aimed to assess depression, anxiety and stress as well as mental health and well-being among Hungarian adults. Material and methods. The online survey study consisted of two data collections: the first survey was conducted in the spring of 2022 with the participation of 482 adults, while the second survey was performed in the spring of 2023 with 1157 adults. The questionnaire contained questions on sociodemographic data, about subjective mental status and characteristics of mental health. Results. During the one year passed since the last pandemic wave, mitigation of the symptoms of depression and stress and the worsening of anxiety symptoms was observed among the Hungarian adult population. A slight improvement of emotional and psychological well-being but a mild deterioration of social well-being was experienced in the same timeframe in the year following the pandemic. Conclusions. Long-term monitoring of the population’s mental status is justified, and the attention of professionals working in the field of mental health improvement is again directed to the necessity of prevention and intervention programs targeting vulnerable groups.

Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-06) Makaruk, Beata ; Grantham, Weronika ; Szeszko, ŁukaszBackground. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a glucose tolerance disorder posing health risks for both the mother and fetus. Lifestyle modifications are recommended to control glucose levels before pharmacotherapy. The aims of this study were 1) to examine the impact of combined GDM intervention on the glycemia levels and pregnancy outcomes in a woman with GDM; and 2) to explore what can help women adhere to the desired lifestyle changes recommended for GDM. Material and methods. This instrumental study uses a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. It focuses on a comprehensive lifestyle intervention, incorporating exercise, dietary protocol, maternal education, and support. One participant was enrolled, starting the intervention at the 24th week of pregnancy. Low glycemic index (<55%) and low glycemic load meals were recommended. Exercises were supervised and conducted regularly three times a week until delivery (48 sessions in total). Results. Glucose levels remained within normal range throughout the entire pregnancy, without the need for pharmacotherapy. The pregnancy resulted in a natural delivery of a healthy newborn with normal parameters. The participant completed the entire intervention, implementing the recommended lifestyle changes and avoiding complications associated with GDM. Conclusions. 1. Individualized and holistic care for women with GDM can help maintain normal glucose levels and increase the chances of positive pregnancy outcomes. 2. Key factors contributing to the success of the intervention were emotional support, education, and personalized care provided by specialists. 3. Implementing lifestyle changes during pregnancy may reduce the need for pharmacological interventions and complications related to GDM.

RekordThe effect of "Back School" intervention on Chinese patients with chronic low back pain(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-10) Wang, Zhe ; Makai, Alexandra ; Czakó, Dorina Evelin ; Tumpek, Nikolett Ildikó ; Bogdán, Kinga ; Járomi, MelindaBackground. The Back School program has been recommended in many countries around the world for patients with low back pain (LBP) to help improve self-efficacy to enhance their prognosis. However, few studies have reported on the application of the Back School in East Asia, including China. This study aimed to explore the Back School’s effect on Chinese adults with chronic LBP based on four areas: posture, knowledge of LBP, physical activity and body performance. Material and methods. There were 10 participants in the intervention group and 11 in the control group. Baseline data was collected prior to the intervention, including upper body physical examination, core and lower limb muscle examination, Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire, LBP Knowledge Questionnaire and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Physical indicators and questionnaires were retaken after the 8-week Back School intervention. The differences between the two groups were compared before and after the intervention. Results. There was a statistically significant increase in McGill trunk flexion test results and knowledge of LBP (especially basic knowledge and treatment sections) in the intervention group. Conclusions. The Back School-based intervention model has a positive impact on muscle performance in the core area and knowledge acquisition of LBP in Chinese patients with chronic LBP.

RekordFactors to help recognize burnout symptoms in hospital nurses(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-08-29) Lukács, Andrea ; Simon, NóraBackground. It is important to recognize burnout symptoms among nurses, as it not only affects their wellbeing but can also compromise the quality of care they provide to patients. The aim of this study was to identify potential explanatory factors that help recognize nurse burnout. Material and methods. Nurses working in hospital settings were invited to take part in an online survey in 2023. Measurements included demographics, physical health (health status, physical activity), emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as communication between nurses and physicians. To find explanatory factors for nurse burnout symptoms, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted using SPSS 28.0 statistical software. The significance level was set at p-values ≤ 0.05. Results. The data of 233 participants were analyzed, with 27.53±10.21 years of work experience. The majority of participants (93%) were female. The average age was 47.22±8.93 years. There were three significant variables that contributed to burnout symptoms: distress, nurse-physician communication and physical activity. Overall, the final model explained 58% of the variance. Conclusions. The results emphasize the significance of reducing distress, promoting healthy relationships between nurses and physicians, and encouraging physical activity as ways to lessen burnout among nurses. Since burnout among nurses doesn’t dissipate naturally, it necessitates deliberate intervention.

RekordFirefighters' knowledge about advanced first aid in thermal burns in children: survey research(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-14) Dudziński, Łukasz ; Czyżewski, Łukasz ; Marzec, Leszek ; Kubiak, Tomasz ; Maczulski, KrzysztofBackground. The aim of the study was the assessment of the level of firefighters’ knowledge about the principles of helping injured minors (children of no specific age) with thermal burns. Material and methods. An anonymous survey was conducted in the period 1st February 2023 - 30th April 2023 among firefighters in the three Polish voivodships: Lublin, Świętokrzyskie and Warmian-Masurian. The study included 346 people who agreed to participate in the study and completed the questionnaire. The original questionnaire included 17 questions regarding demographics and checking the knowledge of emergency medical services including the issue of thermal burns. Results. In the study group, the average length of service was 11±7 years. People with longer work experience were statistically significantly more likely to provide aid to burn victims (45% vs. 58%, p=0.022), but there was no statistically significant impact of work experience on the level of knowledge about: the influence of the burn surface area on the risk of developing hypothermia in a child (p=0.880; p=0.482), the severe burn surface area in a child (p=0.478; p=0.143), and calculating the burn surface area in a child (p=0.408; p=0.168). Conclusions. The level of firefighters’ knowledge about helping minors injured due to thermal burns is insufficient. The frequency of helping burn victims did not have a significant impact on the level of knowledge about the burn surface area and the risk of shock. Child’s reactions to stress and pain, as well as the emotions of parents were indicated as the most frequent difficulties while providing advanced first aid.

RekordThe nutritional value and health benefits of sweet corn kernels (Zea mays ssp. saccharata)(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-19) Baranowska, AlicjaThe aim of this paper was to review scientific studies concerning the nutritional value and healthy properties of sweet corn kernels. Sweet corn (Zea mays ssp. saccharata) is a popular vegetable in America and many European countries. It is also increasingly recognized in Poland. The practical benefits of sugar corn result, among others, from the nutritional value of caryopses and their taste. The review of the literature of the research subject presented in this paper allows us to state that sugar corn caryopses are a source of carbohydrates (simple sugars, starch), protein, vitamins, mineral ingredients, phenolic acids, carotenoids and dietary fiber. The results of chemical analyses prove that sugar corn kernels do not contain gluten; therefore, this plant plays a particularly important role in the nutrition of people with coeliac disease, and corn flour is a valuable product in the food industry. An increasing number of research evidence shows that the regular consumption of wholemeal corn reduces the risk of developing many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and digestive diseases. The analysis of the literature of the research subject allows us to conclude that sugar corn should be a permanent element of everyday diet, particularly because it can be consumed both in a fresh and processed form all year round. Keywords: sweet corn, chemical constitution, nutritional value, health

RekordPhysical activity of Ukrainian and Polish medical students in the beginning of the war in Ukraine(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-25) Adamczak, Bartosz Bogusz ; Kuźnik, Zofia ; Makles, Szymon ; Kosendiak, AureliuszBackground. The war in Ukraine has had profound implications for public health and mental well-being. Physical activity (PA) has been recognized for its beneficial impact on mental health, yet the effects of war on exercise behavior remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate variables related to PA in Ukrainian medical students compared to their Polish counterparts in the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Material and methods. The study involved 225 participants from medical universities in Wroclaw, Poland (n=120), as well as Lviv (n=49) and Ivano-Frankivsk (n=56), Ukraine. Data collection took place between May and July 2022. PA levels were assessed using the International PA Questionnaire, measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task minutes per week (MET-min/wk). Additionally, a custom questionnaire was utilized to evaluate PA barriers, motives, and preferred forms of activity. Results. Ukrainian students demonstrated significantly higher overall PA compared to Polish students (Total MET: Lviv 3759.0 MET-min/wk and Ivano-Frankivsk 4452.0 MET-min/wk vs. Wroclaw 2841.8 MET-min/wk, p<0.001). Walking and cycling emerged as the most prevalent forms of PA. The primary barrier to PA in Poland was a lack of time, while lack of motivation was more prominently displayed in Ukraine. Notably, an increase in self-esteem appeared to be a more prevalent motive in Ukraine (p<0.0001). Conclusions. Further investigation is warranted to understand the underlying reasons for the observed differences. It is crucial to ascertain whether increased PA in Ukraine is a coping mechanism for stress or attributed to other factors. Additionally, longitudinal studies are needed to identify emerging trends and changes in the population’s response over time.

RekordQuality of life of women with breast cancer and support of self-help groups: pilot study(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-09-21) Majerníková, Ľudmila ; Obročníková, Andrea ; Hudáková, AnnaBackground. Assessment of quality of life (QoL) is important for cancer survival and can be influenced by positive social support. The aim of the study was to compare the QoL of patients with breast cancer in terms of using the support of a self-help group (SG) in relation to quality of life. Material and methods. The research group consisted of 135 respondents, who were the patients with malignant breast cancer. The first comparative sample of respondents, who did not attend the SG, was numbered 70. The second comparative sample of respondents, who attended the SG, consisted of 65 patients. Results. In mental health QoL, body image was rated better in patients who attended the SG; in relationship QoL, positive significance was shown in the sphere of sexual life and social support in the SG patients. In the environmental area, QoL was statistically significant in the availability of health services in favor of the SG patients. When comparing the individual domains of the questionnaire, we found more significant differences in the sphere of mental experience and social relationships for the SG patients. Conclusions. Social intervention has a positive effect on treatment outcome, length of life and the life quality of breast cancer survivors and contributes significantly to coping with changes in social ties, sexual intimacy in marriages and partnerships, family relationships and has a positive effect on improving mental and physical health.

RekordThe role of component-based diagnostics in hazelnut allergy testing(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-09-20) Szalai, Adrienn J. ; Dojcsakne Kiss-Tóth, Eva ; Fodor, BertalanBackground. Allergies have become a widespread disease in all parts of the world. Allergic diseases affect nearly 30% of the population in Hungary, of which food allergies account for a significant proportion. In this paper the prevalence of hazelnut allergy was analyzed. Material and methods. In the present study, the sensitivity to hazelnut, a specific and otherwise healthy food component, was investigated comparing it with the self-reported symptoms of the participants, and Component-Resolved Diagnostic (CRD) method. In the study a total of 229 persons were included, 87 men and 142 women. Results. Molecular allergy testing showed some serum immunoglobulin E level elevation related to hazelnut in 20 participants of which 1 individual was asymptomatic but CRD positive for hazelnut. There was positivity in 90% of the cases for the component Cor a 1, which is perhaps a consequence of a cross-reaction to the homologous component Bet v 1 of birch pollen. In 10% of cases, sensitization to components of Cor a 8 was found, which may be a consequence of cross-reactivity to the lipid transfer protein (LTP) component of other foods. Conclusions. Knowledge of hazelnut sensitization may be important for people affected, as avoiding consumption of raw hazelnut may theoretically prevent the development of hazelnut allergy.

RekordSero-prevalence and associated risk factors of blood-borne viral infection among healthcare workers of a tertiary referral hospital: a single-center experience(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-09-08) Merza, Muayad Aghali ; Mohammed, Sabah Ahmed ; Qasim, Ayid Murad ; Abdulah, Deldar MoradBackground. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are often exposed to contaminated blood and body fluids from infected patients. There is no research on blood-borne infection in Iraqi Kurdistan; therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of blood-borne infections of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and their associated risk factors among HCWs in the hospital. Material and methods. This cross-sectional study included 800 HCWs from a major tertiary teaching hospital, who were selected using a non-random technique. Results. The mean age of the HCWs was 35.15 years (range: 18-70 years), consisting of males (56.0%) and females (44.0%) from various specialties and different departments. The seroprevalence of HBV was 0.75% (n=6) among HCWs. However, the seroprevalence of HBV was not significantly different among HCWs with different characteristics. Only one HCW had a positive result for HCV (0.13%), while no HCWs were found to have HIV. The study showed that 34.63% had experienced needlestick injuries, and 64.88% had received the HBV vaccination. Additionally, 27.20% were smokers, and 1.42% were alcohol consumers. Other characteristics included previous hospitalization (17.28%), a history of blood transfusion (6.23%), a history of surgical operations (27.48%), and a history of dental interventions (86.69%). Conclusions. The study revealed a low seroprevalence of HBV and HCV among HCWs. No active HIV infection and almost none of them had contact with HCV.

RekordTobacco smoking habits of secondary school students(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-10-25) Dziura, Gabriel ; Tokaraska-Rodak, MałgorzataFor several years, we have been observing a positive trend of the reduction in the number of young people taking up tobacco smoking. However, the age when people initiate this habit is particularly worrisome. Smoking traditional tobacco products is as harmful as using their equivalents, such as chewing tobacco. The issue is noticed on a global scale, according to the information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as nationwide, as indicated by the Polish Ministry of Health. Smoking is a common problem in Poland. It is estimated that 29% of adults smoke tobacco, of which 34% are men, and 23% are women, whereas young people most often initiate smoking within groups of their peers. Smoking leads to a series of health consequences, including acceleration of cell ageing processes, the weakening of immune system functions, which significantly influences the risk of tobacco-related diseases in adult life, increased frequency of lesions related to cardiac muscle ischemia, and to physical and mental addiction to nicotine.

RekordUse of reflexology in diabetes management(Akademia Bialska im. Jana Pawła II, 2023-09-03) Çalışır Kundakçı, ŞuleDiabetes is a significant chronic disease that creates a serious burden on individuals and society. Chronic diseases are among the main factors that cause deterioration in the quality of life of individuals, limitations in their daily lives and premature deaths. Diabetes can lead to dysfunction in all the body’s systems when not treated in a timely and well-treated manner. In order to manage the complex symptoms of diabetes, patients sometimes turn to complementary and alternative therapies in addition to medical treatment. The aim of complementary practices is to create a healing environment, to raise awareness of the individual and to reveal the power of self-healing. Diabetes patients generally use complementary and alternative therapies for diabetes treatment or general health. It is known that patients with diabetes use complementary and alternative therapies to lower/balance blood sugar and prevent diabetes complications. Complementary and alternative treatment methods generally used in diabetes are yoga, acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy and herbal therapies. This article was compiled to be both informative and helpful for future research due to the lack of sufficient studies on the effects of reflexology in the treatment of patients with diabetes.
